Ø101.6 mm Drawer Magnet for Tablet Press Feed Lines
Key Features
- Ø101.6 mm (SMS 4″) clamp ferrule inlet, quick to fit and remove with a clamp
- 3 Ø18 mm neodymium rods arranged in two rows in the drawer
- 10,000 Gauss at the rod surface
- Drawer door with handle and gasket, held closed by 4 hinged eye bolts
- Catches wire, screws and steel fragments in granules on their way to the tablet press; no power needed
This Ø101.6 mm drawer magnet is used in pharmaceutical plants to remove iron particles from granules and powder blends on their way to the tablet press. The housing is fitted vertically in the line: material drops in through the clamp-connected inlet at the top and passes between the rods in the drawer. The drawer holds three Ø18 mm neodymium rods arranged in two rows. Wire, screws, washers and steel fragments stay on the rod surface, while the material carries on through the pyramid reducer and into the outlet pipe.

Where Does Metal Come From in Tablet Manufacturing?
In wet granulation, powders are blended, granulated, dried and screened; in direct compression the blend skips granulation and goes straight to the press. Either way, metal can come off mixer blades, granulator and screen wires, conveying equipment, or from bolts, nuts and washers left behind after maintenance.
A steel fragment that reaches the feed hopper can damage the punches and dies or end up inside a tablet. A drawer magnet in the feed line catches these pieces before the granules enter the press.
Where Is the Ø101.6 mm Drawer Magnet Fitted?
- In the vertical line between the granule container or IBC discharge station and the tablet press
- Just before the feed hopper of the tablet press
The clamp ferrule at the inlet connects to a Ø101.6 mm (SMS 4″) pipe with a clamp. Choose a position where material flows downwards through the housing and there is room to pull the drawer out.
Why Two Rows of Ø18 mm Rods?
In a narrow Ø101.6 mm line, slim rods leave more of the cross-section open, which helps granules keep flowing freely. Because the rods sit in two rows, material passes two rows of magnets on its way down, which improves the chance of catching iron particles travelling through the middle of the flow compared with a single-row drawer.
How to Clean It
- Stop the press feed and make sure no material is left in the housing or the line above it.
- Loosen the four eye bolts holding the door, swing them aside and pull the drawer out by its handle.
- Wipe the collected metal off the rods with a gloved hand or a clean cloth. Clean product-contact surfaces according to your site procedure.
- Check the door gasket, slide the drawer back in and tighten the eye bolts evenly.
To take the housing out of the line completely, open the inlet clamp and release the outlet pipe connection. In the first weeks check the rods after every batch, then set the interval by how much metal builds up.
Limits and Safety
The drawer magnet holds ferromagnetic particles such as iron and carbon steel. It does not hold aluminium, brass, glass or plastic, and it does not reliably hold austenitic stainless steel. A metal detector is needed for these. Ambient and product temperature must not exceed 80 °C. Neodymium magnets are strong: keep the drawer away from anyone fitted with a pacemaker or other implanted medical device, and from payment cards and electronic devices, and take care not to trap your fingers when bringing it near steel surfaces.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the drawer magnet affect the granules?
No. The magnetic field pulls ferromagnetic particles such as iron and steel; it does not change the structure of the tablet granules.
The tablet press already has a metal detector. Do I still need a drawer magnet?
Yes. A metal detector at the press outlet rejects tablets that contain metal, but it cannot stop a fragment that has already reached the punches and dies. The drawer magnet holds iron particles before they enter the press, and the detector catches the non-ferrous metals the magnet cannot hold. The two complement each other.
My line is not Ø101.6 mm. Can you make it with a different connection?
Yes. Send us the pipe diameter and connection type (clamp, flange or plain pipe), and we will size the housing and the number of rods to suit.
